Dogs as Serious About Playing at Work as you Are !!
Welcome to Stratford's Kennels ! People sometimes ask me where I got the name for my kennel from, and the answer is really kind of a nerdy English teacher kind of thing. Stratford was where Shakespeare was born, and I love Shakespeare. Enough said.
Stratford Kennels is located in the White Mountains of North Eastern Arizona, at about 7,000 feet in the town of Lakeside. I love this area, both for raising my family and playing with my dogs. It has beautiful winters with snow, cold weather and great running conditions, but it also has moderate summers that aren't too hard on the dogs. Living here has truly been a blessing !
Stratford Kennels was established in 2003 with the purchase of my very first AKC registered dog: Stratford's Ophelia (Ellas) from Chad and Tia Cooper's Ellas Kennels in South Dakota. ( Ophelia is from Shakespeare's Hamlet by the way, just FYI. ) I had my breed quality female, and I began looking for a male that I thought would combine well with Ophelia's temperment and breeding. I found Moonridge's Kentucky Timber out of Moonridge Kennels in Kentucky. ( Timber was already named and registered- so he kind of broke down the Shakespeare theme a bit. ) Then cameTowbar's Desdemona - out of Towbar Kennels in Canada. ( Desdemona is the tragic wife from Shakespeare's Othello. ) About a year later I traded a puppy to Candyrock Kennels out of Ohio for Stratford's Juliet (from Romeo and Juliet obviously). The newest member of the Stratford Family is Stratford's Oberon (the Fairy King from A Midsummer Night's Dream) - the son of Timber and Ophelia, making our total count of AKC registered Malamutes five.
For now the kennel is complete; I have never wanted a huge kennel. I have two solid breed quality studs and three fantastic females from different lines. So Stratford dogs are really a combination of Ellas Kennels ( a lot of Wakon Kennels background ), Moonridge Kennels ( with many Canadian roots ), Candyrock Kennels (for the solid white coloring) and Towbar Kennels (solid North Canadian bloodlines ). The dogs have beauty, power, size, agility, and most importantly amazing temperments!
I guess I have been into sled dogs for just about ever. I can remember reading THE COMPLETE WORKS OF JACK LONDON as a kid and loving The Call of the Wild. Born and raised in Arizona didn't hamper my dream - it just put it on hold for a while until I could finish college and get up to the beloved White Mountains to teach, write, love and train dogs, and raise a family.
I love this breed. I own a Siberian Husky as well, and he is great - but the Alaskan Malamute has my heart. They are kind, emotional, fun, loving, not-quite as high strung as the Siberian, and powerful. They have grace and power and spectacular beauty. What else could you want?
